Rating Review of the 1996 SORC in Miami, FL.
The following is a graphical review of the SORC '96 results. There are graphs of races 1 through 6 and a cumulative graph. This was done by the MASF rating committee solely to evaluate the fairness of the overall ratings and of course look for areas needing improvement. The graphs are based on corrected time difference from the firs place boat. The graphs start at 00:00:00 with the first place boat and curves up with the number of hours, minutes and seconds each successive boat follows on corrected time. Ideally a perfect rating system would have a flat line as everyone would have tied.
As this is for rating purposes only we have "changed the rules" a bit. The cumulative graph is based on a sum of the elapsed times rather than each days placing. Also the 7th and last race is not included due primarily to the extreme 30+ knot wind conditions. This edited view sees the 6 individual races as one long race averaging in the good and bad performances of each boat and a broader band of wind conditions. Wind strengths are noted at the top of each graph. However it does change the finishes a bit most notably first and second. Smyth was able to overcome a first race 12th place with a number of firsts later on. Also two boats, Cataclysmal and Thor's Hammer, were given fictitious times for 3 races they didn't start or complete. This was to keep them on the cumulative graph. Their fictitious times kept them in their average position for their previous races.
It's our hope that by sharing this info the rating process can be
demystified. You will also note a second PHRF corrected time included for comparison
